Industry First: Wiley Launches AI Gateway for Scientific Discovery
On October 14th, Wiley, a global leader in authoritative content and research intelligence, announced the launch of the Wiley AI Gateway, the industry's first native AI research intelligence platform. Through a single access point, researchers can access trusted content from leading academic publishers worldwide.
Unlike closed ecosystems that require researchers to use proprietary tools, the Wiley AI Gateway emphasizes interoperability, seamlessly integrating academic content and data subscription services into mainstream AI platforms. Currently, Anthropic's Claude, AWS Marketplace, Mistral AI's Le Chat, and Perplexity have all integrated with the gateway.
Jay Flynn, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Wiley, stated, “Wiley’s AI Gateway revolutionizes how researchers use AI for scientific research by integrating peer-reviewed, trusted content directly into their daily AI workflows. In just one year, researchers’ use of AI jumped from 57% to 84%. We recognized the need to support them in their work environments and build the infrastructure that ensures AI-driven research is based on validated academic resources while making high-quality content a core pillar of reliable scientific discovery.”
Unlocking the Value of the Entire Scientific Research Ecosystem
This AI gateway employs advanced content conversion technology to transform academic content and expert resources into an AI-optimized format, while preserving citation integrity, methodological background, and peer review verification information. This sophisticated content enhancement process, combined with an interface built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), ensures that AI tools accurately understand, integrate, and cite research content, meeting the stringent requirements of accuracy and reliability in scientific exploration. Currently, the platform is available to beta users and offers significant value to the following groups:
• Universities and research labs: Access comprehensive cross-publishing institution literature through a familiar AI interface, with all responses based on peer-reviewed resources.
• Corporate R&D teams: Accelerate innovation cycles and ensure groundbreaking insights are grounded in validated scientific methodologies by leveraging AI-driven research discovery tools covering multiple disciplines and publication institutions.
• AI Development Partners: By systematically integrating peer-reviewed research findings and leveraging professional content resources, Wiley develops more reliable knowledge-driven AI applications, effectively avoiding content "illusions" and "biases."
Wiley's AI Gateway bridges various publishing institutions to mainstream AI platforms while ensuring strict control over content usage rights and maintaining its own independence. Following Wiley's Atypon platform clients Sage and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), more leading academic publishing institutions will join this network to jointly build trustworthy AI research solutions.
Lauren Collett, Head of Higher Education Partnerships at Anthropic, stated, “The AI gateway significantly expands Claude’s research capabilities by directly connecting to peer-reviewed content. Researchers can now seamlessly integrate credible scientific literature with Claude’s analytical capabilities—from statistical analysis to code generation—unlocking entirely new research workflows while always adhering to the rigorous standards required for scientific discovery.”
Building on Wiley's ongoing AI collaboration initiatives in 2025, the gateway has already supported several important projects: the European Space Agency's Φ-lab is using the platform to integrate academic content into the Virtual Earth Expert (EVE) system; and Wiley's generative AI document retrieval agent, developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), is the first such solution on the AWS platform built by a publisher.
“Researchers have access to an unprecedented wealth of data resources, but accurately acquiring the information they need remains a challenge,” said Dan Sheeran, General Manager of Amazon Web Services’ Healthcare and Life Sciences division. “Data is the foundation of AI innovation, and AWS continues to invest in the development of advanced AI tools to help researchers discover and effectively utilize key data in a timely manner, accelerating the scientific discovery process. By providing the Wiley AI Gateway to life science customers through the AWS Marketplace, researchers can avoid cumbersome data procurement and focus more on the core aspects of innovative research and development.”
Wiley's AI Gateway platform is now fully open, and publishing organizations are welcome to integrate it with their AI research tools. For more information, please visit the AI Solutions page.
